Nothing makes me more upset then having to throw away a container of berries that spoiled too quickly. I’ve had that problem lately and when I’m spending upwards of $6 for a pint of strawberries to use in this super simple green smoothie recipe, I’m basically throwing money away. Just last week I paid $10 for a 2 1/2 pound container of strawberries at the grocery store and 3 days later they started to grow mold and look bad. 3 days! While I make smoothies or smoothie bowls almost everyday for the kids and I, I want the berries to last as long as possible.

We eat our fruits and veggies pretty quickly since I make us smoothies every morning and my kids love to eat fruit. Both of them pop blueberries, blackberries and strawberries like candy so I try to make sure the fridge is always full.

But when they start to spoil before we even have a chance to eat them, we’re all sad. Based on the prices of these fruits, I may even shed a tear.

If you struggle to eat your greens or get your kids to eat their greens, you should try drinking them! Once you get passed the fact that these are green smoothies, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at just how good these smoothies really are.

Rest assured your kids will be begging you to make these again!

HOW TO HELP YOUR BERRIES LAST LONGER

I’ve been making smoothies almost daily for the last 15 years. Both of my kids love them and request them frequently.

Over the years, I’ve learned a thing or two to make the process smoother by making freezer bags of fruit so they’re ready for smoothies when certain fruits may be out of season. Or shaking things up and making smoothie bowls for a change.

But keeping my berries fresher, longer is my key goal. The first step is taking them out of the plastic containers they come in.

They don’t help keep them fresh.  What works for me has been a few different things.

First the containers are important. I’ve used:

  • These Rubbermaid Fresh Works Containers
  • Ball Canning Jars (Large ones)

Currently the Ball Canning Jars are my go-to right now. I transfer the fruit right from the store containers into the canning jars. I pop the lids on and put them right in the fridge.

Both of these fruit storage options has drastically increased the life of my fruit allowing us to enjoy smoothies longer.

Plus they’re really, really easy to make so there’s no excuse not to eat some delicious fruits and veggies every day.

I love smoothies because you can totally customize your flavors.

Some days we’ll use orange juice like in this recipe and sometimes I’ll swap it out for almond milk, if it’s just me drinking it. There’s really no wrong way to make them.

We buy a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables and it goes bad too fast. These sound nice!

I would keep berries since they go bad so fast.

I really hate when I go to pull out lettuce for a salad & it has gone bad overnight. It does seem to happen way too quickly even though I store it in the crisper. And I recently had strawberries start to look bad after just a few days. I would put lettuce & berries in these to start with.

Yes, at times I'm embarrassed to admit that we throw away produce because it's gone bad before we could eat it. I'd use these containers for blueberries and strawberries!

I would use them for my grandson's favorite baby carrots.
