One of my favorite activities during the holidays is crafting our own holiday ornaments. I love looking back at our ornaments from previous years and fingerprint ornaments hold a special place in my heart. Our babies don’t stay little for long and before you know it you have mini-adults on your hands. Each year when I pull out our creations to hang on the tree, I’m reminded just how little my son once was. While my daughter is still little, creating these heirloom treasures is a must for me. Last weekend we spend the afternoon getting crafty and this year we made holiday light fingerprint ornaments. They came out adorable and look perfect on our tree.
With some basic supplies you can start this fun tradition with your little (or big) ones. You’ll need:
- Clear plastic ornaments
- Colored paint
- Black sharpie marker
- WaterWipes (to clean those little hands)
Pick the colors your want your lights to be. I went with four colors – red, green, blue and yellow. Add a little of each color paint onto a tray.
Have your child dip their fingers into the paint (or do it for them if they’re too little).
Press finger down onto the ornament. Continue around the entire ornament alternating the colors.
Set the ornament aside to dry. Grab a WaterWipe to wipe off their little hands before there’s a mess everywhere.
Once dry, take the black marker and draw little bases for the lights and a cord to connect them. This is great for the kids to do if they’re old enough.
Using a funnel for less of a mess, let the kids add their favorite color glitter inside the ornament. Just enough so you can give it a shake and see some color.
Once the glitter is in, place the top back on and tie with a piece of ribbon.
The kids will be so excited to hand their personalized ornament on the tree and you’ll have an adorable reminder every year of just how little their tiny hands were.
Since my son is older now, I forgot just how messy paint + glitter and a toddler can be. At first she had no idea what I was doing with her little finger and the paint but she quickly figured it out and started getting paint all over herself.
I was really glad I kept a pack of WaterWipes nearby for an easy clean up. I just grabbed a wipe to clean up her hands before she could stick them in her mouth or on her clothes.
When cleaning her little hands, WaterWipes is my go-to choice. They’re a chemical free baby wipe that contains only two ingredients – 99.9% pure Irish water and 0.1% grapefruit seed extract – and that’s it. I like that they offer a natural option for my little one especially since her hands are always going in her mouth. I don’t have to worry about any residue of anything I don’t want left on her hands.
