One of my favorite parts of homeschooling our kids is the flexibility it allows them to focus on their passions and things they are interested in. While the toddler is just hitting the preschool age, the activities we do with her are fun more than anything. For my oldest on the other hand, his work is only getting harder and it may not be as fun to him as it used to be. Because we have the flexibility to plan out our lessons and cater them to his interests, we do that as much as we can. Take for instance, his love of cooking. He’s been cooking in the kitchen with me since he could walk and all that practice over the years has really paid off. He’s turning into quite the little chef. So we make sure to include plenty of cooking into our week for him to hone his skills.
Since this was a holiday week, we changed things up and I made him the “boss.” I put him in charge for this week’s lessons so he could have an idea of what actually goes into our lesson plans and what needs to get done. Once his studies we completed, we headed into the kitchen to whip up a fun snack.
The great thing about cooking is he’s still learning even while he’s having fun. Between measuring ingredients and calculating cooking times, he’s practicing things like math skills and life skills and he doesn’t even realize it. No matter what my kids end up choosing as a career, I want them to be happy and use their skills to be the best they can be. I want them to be a boss and take charge of their lives, even at a young age, to help shape them for their future.
Since the weather has been unseasonably warm here in New Jersey, (it was 75 degrees today) we thought the warm weather deserved a special treat.
My chef helped me whip up these Orange Cream Floats. They’re the perfect after-school treat, movie night treat or just because treat, and they’re super easy to make—so that’s always a plus. They’re even a great way for your little ones to get creative in the kitchen.
You’ll need some vanilla ice cream, sprinkles, whipped cream and a gallon of Tampico Citrus Punch.
Have your little chefs decorate the cups with melted chocolate and sprinkles then fill with Tampico.
Add two scoops of ice cream and top off with some whipped cream.
