When the school year rolls around, it’s not just homework the kids bring home. Germs rear their ugly little heads and squeeze their way into our lives too. So when I’m shopping for back to school supples, I use this time to go through our first aid kit and medicine chest to get rid of expired medicines and re-stock anything we might need. There’s nothing worse than one of the kids waking up in the middle of the night with a fever and finding out the medicine has expired. Yes, it happened to me a few years ago and I had to send my hubby on a middle of the night pharmacy run. Not fun. That year I vowed to make sure our first aid it was stocked and ready to go every September when the school year rolls around.
GET PLENTY OF SLEEP
Set bedtime routine and stick to it. Making sure the kids get plenty of sleep and their bodies are well rested is one of the best ways to prevent getting sick and to help their bodies recover faster when they do.
EAT A WELL BALANCED DIET
Before sending them off to school, make sure they eat a healthy, well- balanced diet to keep their bodies healthy and strong and more resisitant to germs.
CREATE A MEDICINE BOX
Kids are still going to get sick no matter what you do. So to make it easier on all of us when they do, I like to prepared. So I made a personalized medicine box for the kids. I keep a thermometer and their medicines in their own box to put high on a shelf in our hall closet where I know the kids can’t reach.
I also created 2 boxes – one for the kids medicine and one for the adult. This way, if I’m not home and the grandparents or my husband is home with sick kids, it’s easier for them to figure out which medicine is the right one. A small sized box with a lid is perfect for this. You don’t have to get too fancy.

I like to be prepared and keep my medicine kit filled with essentials for any type of aches and pains or coughs and colds.
