Now that the weather is finally warming up we’re spending more and more time outdoors. After spending the majority of our time indoors during the winter months, we can’t wait to get outside and play! Every nice day, you’ll find us moving our homeschool lessons outside to take advantage of the beautiful weather and change in season. If you’re looking for some fun ideas for your kids to spend more time outside, I’ve got some great ones for you! We’re loading up our Radio Flyer Wagon and exploring the great outdoors!
SEARCH FOR WILDLIFE
As part of our homeschool lessons, we frequently go searching for wildlife right in our own backyard or at the park. There’s a great little park not to far away that has a lake, hiking trails and plenty of wildlife. We’ve seen otters, fish, heron, and even our trusty neighborhood hawk. Not to mention all the insects, bunnies and groundhogs that call our yard and neighborhood home.
We’ll grab our notebooks, pens and head out to see what we can spot for the day. The kids not only learn about all the different animals but the environments they live in as well.
TAKE THEM FISHING
It’s no secret how much my kids love fishing. When the weather is warm, you’ll almost always find us down the shore or at the lake fishing! My kids are hooked. This is one of the best ways to introduce your kids to nature and have fun while doing it. Every catch they make, make it fun. Take a picture of their catch before you let it go and research it when you get home.
Find your state’s free fishing days and introduce your kids to fishing!
PLAN A HIKE
This is probably one of our families favorite activities. The kids look at it as fun and my husband and I get our exercise in. It’s a win-win for everyone but besides the benefits of physical activity. There’s something special about being our in nature away from our phones, video games and TV and just connecting together as a family.
Sometimes the best memories happen out on the trails. The kids have the freedom to explore and test their boundaries and limit and really learn what their capable of.
GO ON A NATURE SCAVENGER HUNT
Scavenger hunts are always so much fun. These can be done right in your own backyard or at the park for even more nature hunting fun! It can be as simple as talking about the items like leaves, acorns, animals tracks, etc. that you will look for or print out a printable scavenger hunt for each of the kids.
