This year for us is a year of change. My husband and I have joined a gym, changed our eating habits and even cut back on some of our favorite things all in an effort to lead a more healthy life. Those changes don’t just pertain to us. They involve our kids as well. We want to set a good example for them when it comes to leading a healthy lifestyle. We know our children’s healthy encompasses more than just staying active or eating a well-balanced diet, though. It means connecting them to their communities. It means having them accept their own differences and others’ differences, all while realizing that even the smallest lifestyle change makes a lasting impact on not only them but those around them as well. That’s why I was excited to learn about the BGCA Triple Play Parent’s Game Plan.
Do you have something you do that makes you say “I Feel Better When”? I think we all probably do. I know I feel better when I exercise and eat healthy.
“I FEEL BETTER WHEN” is the mantra for Boys & Girls Clubs of America at the start of this New Year when many people recommit to improving their health and wellness practices. This phrase leads to how small, daily behavioral changes can have a long-term, lasting impact. The Triple Play program is the Boys & Girls Clubs comprehensive health and wellness program that serves young people at the Boys & Girls Clubs giving them the tools and awareness they need to put them on the path to a bright future.
To help encourage this mindset throughout the year, we try to follow these tips.
EAT A BALNACED DIET – Watching what we eat and cutting out a lot of the junk was important for all of us. With just some simple swaps and little changes, we’ve cut back on the amount of sugar we consume and replaced those sugary snacks with more fresh fruits and vegetables. We’ve stopped eating out as much and meal prep to make sure we always have a healthy meal option waiting for us at home.
STAY HYDRATED – Drinking enough water is always a tough one for us. So I bought us all our own water bottle to encourage us to drink more water. Fruit infused water has quickly become a family favorite.
EXERCISE YOUR BODY – Staying active was a challenge for us. We were always on the go running from here to there but not setting time aside to workout or get fit. Now my husband and I joined a gym where we can talk our oldest with us. Once the weather starts to get a little warmer, we’ll be going on daily hikes through the park or walks around the neighborhood to stay active.
EXERCISE YOUR MIND – It’s important for our bodies to stay active to stay healthy but it’s also important for our minds too. We’ve set device limits on the games and tables for more family time with board games, family reading time and things like this. We’ve put an emphasis on reading more instead of gaming more.
GET INVOLVED – Find out ways to help where you live together as a family. Maybe you can help organize a food drive or toy drive around the holidays. There’s no greater feeling than giving back to those in need. Or maybe you want to help plan something fun for your local community. Get together with other families and create a outdoor movie night, a community activity day or anything else that helps connect you to your local community.
