We may be a tad bit excited for Finding Dory, releasing in theaters June 17th. Finding Nemo is one of our favorite family movies and we just can’t wait to see the new movie and see what Dory and the gang are up to. Leading up to the release, I’ll be sharing plenty of fun Finding Dory inspired posts including recipes, activity sheets and more. To kick off my Dory marathon, I wanted to share this DIY Dory Inspired Tutu Dress. My tutu obsession started the minute I found out I was having a little girl. After shopping for boy clothes for over ten years, I was ready for all things frilly and pink. When I learned how easy it was to create tutus for my daughter, I started and just can’t stop. To celebrate the release of the movie, I made her this Finding Dory Tutu Dress inspired by our favorite blue fish and I love how it turned out.
She already loves to dress up and loves her tutus. While she hasn’t seen the Finding Nemo yet, she absolutely loves Dory. From the books we read to the her stuffed Dory, she can’t get enough of her so I knew her next tutu dress had to be related to her favorite blue fish.
Once you start making them you quickly realize just how easy they are to create. Then it becomes a habit. First I started with a Tinkerbell one, then Minnie, now Dory. I think I’ll start on some of her favorite princesses next.
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own Dory Tutu Dress (I found all my supplies, including the button at Hobby Lobby):
- Blue Tulle (I used about 3 rolls)
- Yellow Tulle
- Black Tulle
- Dory Button (optional)
- Black ribbon for straps
- Black crochet top (or headband)
I made my toddler a full length dress but you could easily make this a shorter tutu but cutting the pieces smaller.
Cut the tulle into pieces.
I cut the blue tulle into 26 inch long pieces. Once it was cut, I folded each piece in half so it’s now 13 inches long for the dress. If you want a shorter tutu make the pieces smaller.
Fold the tulle.
Fold a piece of tulle in half and push the folded end through one of the crochet holes on the top. I placed the top around a roll of paper towels to make it easier as I went around.
Make a knot.
Pull the other end of the tulle through the loop.
Pull tight to make a knot.
Repeat.
Repeat those steps all the way around the crochet tops. I wanted a full skirt so I went around twice or at least in any area that was needing more coverage.
Add in the yellow and black “fins”.
Once the blue is all in. I added two black strips and one yellow on each side in the front and back to make it look like Dory.
Add the Dory button.
I sewed the Dory button onto the center of the crochet top.
Sew on the straps.
Measure and cut two straps for the dress. Sew them into place. If you don’t feel like sewing you could use black tulle to make straps similar to how you made the tutu.
Now you have your very own Finding Dory Tutu Dress!
I think I need to make her a Nemo one to match next.

That is a cute idea! I had wanted to make a tutu for my niece, but it takes so much tulle and I couldn't get enough at the fabric store, and then forgot about it. It is something pure fun! and makes nice pictures, too!
