Making your own breadcrumbs is one of the easiest things I’ve ever done. Truthfully I’ve always just bought them but after a year of watching what’s actually in the food I buy and the the fact that I ran out and needed them in a pinch, I’ll never go back to pre-made again. Making your own homemade Panko Bread Crumbs is incredibly easy and they taste amazing in recipes.
Now you might think, “why even bother” when it’s just as easy to buy a carton from the store but I’m here to tell you that it’s just as easy to make your own.
All you need is a loaf of bread and a sheet pan. That’s it.
Seasonings too if you want to make Seasoned Panko Bread Crumbs, but that’s all there is too it.
I used organic white bread but use whatever you have on hand to make this recipe.
The loaf of bread of bread I had needed to be used and earlier in the week, my puppy decided to knock the container of Panko I had off the shelf and all over the floor.
It was just that kind of week with her and I completely forgot to get more at the grocery store.
I was craving my Parmesan Panko Crusted Salmon and, well, needed panko.
So I had no choice but to make my own.
They tasted so much better than store bought and really made the recipe taster amazing.
I’ve since made “plain” panko and seasoned panko. The recipe below is for seasoned Panko bread crumbs, so if you want plain, you can just omit the seasoning.

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE PANKO BREAD CRUMBS
Homemade Panko Bread Crumbs
Making your own homemade Panko Bread Crumbs is easier than you think with this delicious recipe.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf of white bread, crusts removed
- 1/2 tsp. dried oregano
- 1/2 tsp. dried basil
- 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
- 1/4 tp. black pepper
Instructions
Preheat over to 300 F
Remove crust from bread and crumble with you fingers or use food processsor and pulse once or twice.
Sprinkle bread crumbs on a baking sheet in a single layer.
Bake 10-12 minutes. Watch closely as to not brown the bread crumbs.
Remove from over and let cool.
Once cool, place in a bowl and add basil, oregano, garlic and pepper.
Gently stir.
Pour bread crumbs into a canning jar or other jar with lid.
Use within 3 months.
Notes
To make a plain variety of bread crumbs, omit herbs.
