One of our favorite activities to do together as a family is fishing. As soon as the weather breaks in March or April, you’ll find us at the lake or down the shore with our fishing rods hoping to make a catch. Living in New Jersey affords us the luxury of saltwater fishing in the ocean and freshwater fishing at the lakes and streams throughout the state. We truly have the best of both worlds and our kids love it just as much as we do. Tomorrow kicks off National Fishing and Boating Week and it’s the perfect time to grab your poles and head on out to your nearest lake or fishing spot and create some memories with your little ones.
Even if you don’t know anything about fishing, it’s the perfect time to learn. I remember waking up in the wee hours of the morning and heading out fishing with my dad. I’d be exhausted when we got home but the fun times always stayed with me. Thankfully I married someone who brought my long forgotten love of fishing back and enjoys it as much as I did.
We want our children to remember to have those same memories we do. We want them to put the electronics down and get out there and have fun in nature and enjoy the world around them.
These are the memories I want my kids to have and they sure have plenty of them. We took my son fishing as soon as he could walk, and his sister too. Last year she even participated in her first fishing derby. She fell asleep halfway through and missed her first “catch” but thankfully big brother was watching her pole and reeled it in for her.
She has just as much fun as he does out there. While she’s a little too small for surf fishing, she has plenty of fun on the beach digging in the sand or splashing in the water. She prefers to inspect the bluefish and stripers they catch.
During National Fishing and Boating Week, you’ll find family-friendly events and activities all over the U.S. The Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation (RBFF) and Take Me Fishing™ and Vamos A Pescar™ wants you to get outside and find your new favorite fishing hole or boating spot.
