Is Invisalign® Treatment the Right Choice for Your Teen?

This post was sponsored by the Invisalign® brand and all opinions expressed in my post are my own.

Is Invisalign® Treatment the Right Choice for Your Teen? Find out everything you need to know to make an informed choice

A couple of months ago, at a routine dentist appointment, my son’s dentist casually brought up that he thought Ryan should see an orthodontist and that he was probably going to need braces. Those were not words my teenager wanted to hear. Deep down he already suspected it, but hearing it from the dentist made it a reality. He’d researched traditional braces and Invisalign clear aligners on his own already. So he immediately said he wanted Invisalign treatment.

Since he’s older now, I wanted to make sure I took his wishes into consideration. So we made an appointment with a doctor who does traditional braces recommended by our dentist and with an Invisalign provider.

he crucial part of these appointments was finding a doctor who specializes in Invisalign treatment. For us, that was Dr. Segal of Segal and Iyer Orthodontics.

Dr. Segal was incredibly well versed in Invisalign treatment and answered all our questions and concerns. His knowledge blew me away and Ryan was immediately sold.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INVISALIGN® CLEAR ALIGNERS AND TRADITIONAL BRACES

Traditional braces use metal brackets and wires that are attached to the teeth to straighten your teeth. There’s the risk of broken wires, limitation of the foods you can eat and the possibility of teeth staining around the braces. These are all things I experienced myself when I had them.

Then there’s Invisalign treatment. Invisalign treatment is the most advanced clear aligner system in the world! Invisalign aligners are nearly transparent, other people can hardly tell when they’re on your teeth the teeth and they’re removable!

Invisalign treatment is the only treatment that uses SmartTrack® material that straightens teeth with more predictability than other clear aligners*.

HOW DOES INVISALIGN® TREATMENT WORK?

At our Invisalign treatment consultation, I was able to see my son’s treatment plan in 3D right on the computer! His doctor mapped out a custom treatment plan just for him. It showed me everything from how his smile looks now, how Invisalign will correct his smile and how it will likely look in the end.

BEFORE IMAGE OF HIS TEETH

Each set of Invisalign clear aligners will shift his teeth slightly, moving them horizontally, vertically and even rotating them when needed.

SIMULATED RESULTS OF HIS TEETH

The aligners are engineered to use the right amount of force in the right place at the right time. As he completes each stage of treatment, he’ll get new clear aligners.

It was fascinating to see and made me wish Invisalign treatment was around when I was younger. Instead of the traditional braces I had and hated!

TEACHING RESPONSIBILITY

Now that my son is a teenager, he has more of an opinion on the things he needs and wants to do in his life. Invisalign aligners come with a bit more responsibility since he needs to make sure he wears them everyday. He needs to be the one responsible for them and not leaving them behind when we travel or if he takes them out to eat.

I believe that giving kids more responsibility, from a younger age, will make it easier on them as they grow up and have to make real-life choices.

Teaching him to make his own choices and be more responsible is one area of his life that we’re always working on. Any chance I get to make him more independent is a step in the right direction.

I love that Invisalign treatment requires him to be an active participant and essentially responsible for his treatment plan. If he forgets to put them in, accidentally loses them or forgets them when we travel, it all falls on him.

Hopefully, this process will make him more responsible and none of that will happen but let’s face it. He’s a teenager and I’ll be surprised if at least one of those doesn’t happen.

The good thing about Invisalign treatment is should your child accidentally misplace one set of aligners, you can check with their doctor to see if it is okay for them to switch into their next set of aligners early. In many cases, they can move on to the next set with their doctor’s permission.

IS INVISALIGN® TREATMENT EXPENSIVE?

Although my son is receiving complimentary treatment as a result of my partnership with the brand, I wanted to be sure to answer the age old question of how much does it cost. The cost of Invisalign treatment at my practice was comparable to braces and many dental insurance plans often cover Invisalign treatment just as they would other orthodontic treatments like braces, so check with your provider.

IS INVISALIGN® THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOUR TEEN?

Well that depends. As with anything it’s a good idea to weigh the pros and con of each. After having both treatment plans lined out for us, it was easy for us to see why Invisalign® treatment was the clear winner.

Ryan is pretty active and we had to take that into consideration. He wasn’t comfortable with the idea of having metal braces on his teeth for photos and having to watch what he ate. His confidence really played a big part in our decision too, and I knew Invisalign treatment was the perfect choice for him.

WHY WE CHOSE INVISALIGN®

After having consultations for both traditional braces and Invisalign treatment for my teen, we chose Invisalign clear aligners. Not only did the Invisalign treatment have a shorter treatment time, 1 1/2 years with Invisalign versus 3+ with traditional braces (Treatment times may vary depending on case complexity), but also because of the minimal interruptions to his lifestyle and schedule.

He liked that he wouldn’t have to restrict the foods he eats and how they look on his teeth. The aligners are practically clear versus metal so they’ll be hard to notice on his teeth. His confidence improved dramatically once he saw how they would look on his teeth versus metal braces.

With Invisalign treatment, I don’t have to worry about emergency appointments that are associated with metal braces, such as broken wires and brackets. I can remember breaking wires quite often with my metal braces and always having those emergency appointments.

But most importantly, Invisalign clear aligners work. Invisalign has over 20 years of innovation and 6 million+ smiles that enabled Invisalign treatment to treat simple to complex orthodontic cases**. That was enough convincing for me.

He’s already had the measurements taken and has been fitted for his aligners. They’ll be ready in a few weeks and he cannot wait to begin his Invisalign treatment.

Ryan was thrilled with the consultation and his expected results. He’s been telling everyone he can about his Invisalign treatment and cannot wait to get started.

We’ll be bringing you all along with us on this journey too! Stay tuned as we’ll be sharing the ups and downs with you throughout!

I think I will prefer this more than braces. If you've had braces before I think you' know why. Interesting and looks like it's effective.

I feel like Invisalign is the way to go if it would work for the orthodontic needs.

I have heard great things about Invisalign. My daughter would have opted for these if they were available when she needed braces.

I've always wondered about Invisalign and how it worked. I had braces and my daughters are most likely going to need them too. I will have to see if Invisalign will work for them though.
