Finding toys that my almost 12 year old still wants to play with can be a challenge sometimes. Since I limit his screen time on his electronic devices, I’m always in the marker for toys that foster creativity and critical thinking. Of course he still gets plenty of time playing on his electronics but I like he enjoying other things besides video games. Thankfully, there are things out there he still likes. One of his favorite building toys is K’NEX. He’s able to get hands on with his toys and he gets to create so really fun designs so he loves it. His latest creation is the K’NEX Wild Whiplash Roller Coaster. If you’re looking for a fun and engaging gift idea or just something fun for older kids to build, then look no further than this.
Since we homeschool, I try to plan play time into our day whenever I can. That “play” time can be anything from running around the yard to grabbing something to build. The K’NEX Wild Whiplash Roller Coaster fit the bill this past week. He built his own WORKING roller coaster and he couldn’t be any more excited about it.
It definitely isn’t a project that can be done in one day. Well, actually it could if you really wanted to. Instead, he set it up on his desk and built a little each day. The directions were easy to follow and he only needed minimal help in building it. Although we did work on it together some days while my little one napped. It was a fun project to do together and I can’t wait to build another one. There are even downloadable instructions for a 2nd coaster and he cannot wait to start that one.
I love that it’s hands on and require a little more than sticking two plastic pieces together. It requires thinking and problem solving and it really makes you pay attention to the pieces and the instructions. He has a tendency to rush through things and this really made him slow down and evaluate each piece and when he got it wrong, he had to try it again.
There are 580 parts including 14 feet of track and a motorized chain life that bring the coaster to life. The project is over 2 1/2 feet tall when completed and he’s already cleared a spot in his room for it. K’NEX building sets allow kids to build massive, moving, motorized roller coaster toys, ferris wheels and more for hours of building and creating fun.
The K’NEX Wild Whiplash Roller Coaster is a Walmart exclusive and is available at Walmart.com for only $32.97.
