Traveling with my kids is one of my favorite things to do. Being able to visit new places and see the world through their eyes is priceless. Lately, we’ve been traveling up and down the East Coast on fun road trips. We’ve visited Cape Cod, Delaware, the Poconos and so many more fun places this year with even more trips coming up. Since we spend quite a bit of time in the car, it can get a bit uncomfortable. Especially for me. So I try to make sure I follow these five tips before we head out on any road trip.
I have arthritis in my lower back and chronic knee pain (ah, the joys of getting older) so car rides, especially long ones, can be a little uncomfortable. If I’m uncomfortable or sore after a long ride, I’m less likely to be excited to do anything while the kids are full of excitement and ready to go. The last thing I want to be is a party pooper.
I want to be out there splashing in the water with them. I want to be out there building sand castles or collecting sea shells right next to them.
Evie still wants me to hold her sometimes, and I can’t say no. So I have to find ways to manage my aches and pains when we’re on the road.
GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP
The night before our trips, I’m usually running around trying to get things packed so I don’t forget anything and trying to tie up loose ends at home and work. I always seem to go to bed later than I should and I’m usually tired when I wake up. I find the nights I set a time limit to get things done and go to bed early are the days I’m more productive and much more prepared for the drive the next day. There’s nothing worse than being tired in the car (even when I’m not the drive). I’d much rather be awake and enjoy the sights and sounds around us.
This is a big one for me. No matter how long our road trip is, I try to incorporate rest breaks on the way. Sometimes the kids are napping and I use it as a chance to just get out and stretch my legs. Especially for my knees and back. It does wonders to get just out and stretch a bit.
GET COMFORTABLE, IT’S GONNA BE A LONG RIDE
Whether I’m the driver or the passenger, comfort is my top priority. It can be difficult to get comfy in a car packed with your family and all your things. So I make sure I sit with the proper posture, my seat is positioned into a comfortable position and if the car I’m driving has heated seats, they’re on. Even in the summer, it really helps my back on longer trips.
Staying hydrated on the road is important. I like to pack a smaller cooler to keep in the car with waters, and healhty snacks (that aren’t too messy) for all of us.
