I recently spent the day wandering through downtown, camera in hand, and was reminded why this little town deserves far more attention than it gets. From beautifully preserved historic buildings to locally owned boutiques and some fantastic places to grab lunch, Mount Holly is exactly the kind of destination I love discovering.

Originally known as Bridgetown because of the bridge crossing the Rancocas Creek, the town later became the county seat of Burlington County and quickly developed into a bustling commercial center.

Today, that rich history is still visible everywhere you look. Brick sidewalks, centuries-old buildings, churches, and restored storefronts give downtown Mount Holly a timeless charm that’s becoming increasingly rare.

Mount Holly’s Surprising Role in the American Revolution

One of the things that surprised me most while learning about Mount Holly was just how important this little town was during the American Revolution.

In December 1776, Mount Holly became the site of the Battle of Iron Works Hill. Although it wasn’t one of the largest battles of the war, historians believe it played an important role in one of America’s most famous victories.

As Hessian troops focused their attention on Mount Holly, thousands of soldiers were pulled away from Trenton. Just a few days later, George Washington crossed the Delaware River and launched his surprise attack on Trenton. By drawing those troops away, the events in Mount Holly helped create the opportunity for Washington’s victory -one that changed the momentum of the Revolutionary War.

Today, it’s incredible to walk the same streets knowing that this quiet Burlington County town was connected to such a pivotal moment in American history. It’s one of those stories that many people have never heard, making a visit to Mount Holly even more meaningful.

Stroll Through Historic Downtown

One of the best ways to experience Mount Holly is simply by walking.

Unlike larger cities where you’re constantly rushing from place to place, downtown Mount Holly encourages you to slow down. Historic storefronts line High Street, colorful murals brighten alleyways, and independent businesses give the town a personality you just don’t find at chain shopping centers.

Bring your camera because you’ll find beautiful architecture around nearly every corner.

Today, visitors can tour the historic building and learn about its unique architecture, infamous inmates, and centuries of local history.

Visit the Oldest Continuously Active Volunteer Fire Company in the Country

One of the things I love most about visiting small towns is discovering little pieces of history that you would never expect to find.

Did you know Mount Holly is home to the oldest continuously active volunteer fire company in the United States?

The Britannia Fire Company was established back in 1752, more than 20 years before America declared its independence. Think about that for a second. While George Washington was still years away from becoming the nation’s first president, volunteers here were already protecting their neighbors and community from fires.

Of course, firefighting looked a lot different back then. There were no fire engines or modern equipment – just dedicated volunteers working together with leather buckets and hand-operated equipment to battle fires.

Today, the fire department has grown with the times, but its history remains one of Mount Holly’s most impressive claims to fame. It’s incredible to think that an organization founded nearly three centuries ago is still serving the community today.

As you’re exploring downtown, it’s worth taking a few minutes to stop by and appreciate this remarkable piece of American history. It’s another reminder that Mount Holly isn’t just a charming place to shop and grab lunch, it’s a town filled with stories waiting to be discovered.

Another hidden gem is Mill Race Village. This collection of restored historic buildings offers a glimpse into Mount Holly’s past while serving as a gathering place for artisans, community events, and seasonal festivals throughout the year.

Enjoy a Craft Beer or Cocktail

If you’re visiting without the kids, Mount Holly also offers a growing food and beverage scene.
