What’s a Fourth of July celebration without a little F-U-N! Add a little fun to your dessert table with this easy to make Red, White and Blue Piñata Cake. Once you cut into your beautifully decorated cake, there’s a fun surprise inside!

You can bake a cake from scratch if you’d like but if you’re going for quick and easy dessert like I was, then a store bought layer cake will work perfectly for this.

Just make sure it doesn’t have any decorations or anything on it.  I bought a plain vanilla 3-layer cake from my grocery store.

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE A PINATA CAKE

Since we’re going with a store bought cake you really only need the cake, the candies for the inside, some sprinkles to decorate the top and a round, tall glass to cut out the center.

If you want to go the homemade route, you’ll need the ingredients for your favorite cake recipe. Just make sure it’s a recipe to make a layer cake. You want at least 3 layers for the cake.

HOW LONG WILL THE CAKE BE GOOD FOR?

I wouldn’t really make this cake until you’re ready to use it. The morning of should be good but anything other than that the candies inside could get stuck together in the fridge.

WHAT CAN I FILL THE PINATA CAKE WITH?

This is the best part! You can fill it with whatever you’d like! I used red white and blue M&Ms to fit the theme but you could use anything really. Some other ideas that would be just as delicious:

  • Gummy bears
  • Chocolate candies
  • Cookie crumbles
  • other small candies

WHAT YOU NEED TO CUT THE CENTER

You’ll need a round glass or something similar. It has to be big enough to notice, small enough to not take over the entire cake and long enough to go through all the layers. You probably has a glass in your home that will work perfect.

I used a tall, iced tea glass with an opening about 2 – 2 1/2 inches wide and it was the perfect size. Yours may differ depending on the size of your cake.
