Since I had baby number two, I’ve been pretty complacent when it comes to getting back to my pre-baby shape. Honestly I start out with great intentions and things go great for a few weeks before I start craving the things I’m trying to cut cut out. Before the holidays, I made a decision that things had to change. This time I was going to make sure I set up myself up with realistic goals and there was no going back this time. So far so good. By following these five tips, I’ve been able to snack smarter and begin my fitness journey.
My biggest problem is that I’m a snacker. Working from home doesn’t help matters either. It’s so easy for me to walk in the kitchen and grab something I shouldn’t. If I’m working towards a deadline, it’s so much easier to grab some junk food than to wash fruit or whip up something healthier. To fix that I made a few changes to how I shop and what I keep stocked and ready to eat.
SWAP OUT THE SWEETS
I have a major sweet tooth and it’s wasn’t uncommon for me to have several packs of cookies and treats in the pantry at any given time. I overhauled my pantry and cut back on the sweets. I’ll still buy cookies for a treat here and there but gone are the multiple packs just tempting me.
REPLACE THE JUNK WITH FRUIT
One of the best decision I made was cutting back on the amount of sugary snacks I bought at the grocery store. Instead, I make sure to buy plenty of fresh fruit. Now instead of a cookie or chips, I’ll grab some blueberries or a banana.
WATER, WATER, AND MORE WATER
Keeping your body hydrated is really important. There have been days I’m not really even hungry, but I’ll just grab a cookie or junk to eat. I find when I keep drinking water throughout the day, I’m less likely to snack on junk. I’m also not the biggest fan of water. To help me with that, I keep fresh lemons in the fridge at all times so I can add a few slices to my water. I even picked up a new water bottle that I can keep refilling throughout the day.
TRACK WHAT YOU EAT
Years ago I joined Weight Watchers with a group of girls I worked with. I really enjoyed the program and one of the best pieces of information I received when I joined was to track what I eat. It’s one thing that has stuck with me all these years. It’s easy to loose track of what you actually eat all day long. Writing it down helps you see it, written down right in front of you. You may not even realize you ate 6 extra cookies on Monday or several servings of chips on Tuesday. For me being able to see what I ate and where I went wrong helps me to make a better choice the next day. Grab a journal, notebook or anything that you can carry with you to write down what you eat.
PORTION OUT YOUR SNACKS
Each week when I get home from the grocery store, I like to wash my fruit and portion it out into little cups so I can just open the fridge and grab one when hunger strikes. I also like to pick up some better for me snacks. One of my staples is Weight Watchers Light Mozzarella String Cheese. When that late morning hunger hits, I’ll grab another lemon water and a string cheese for a little pick me up.
They are a great tasting snack option that is full of flavor and a satisfying choice for a snack at home or on the go. The individually wrapped pieces of cheese offer great portion control and if you are tracking your Weight Watchers points, are only 1 SmartPoint per serving.
