With just a few more weeks left of summer, my mind is beginning to focus on back to school. Back to making snacks and lunches plus after school snacks and sports. Having a ten year old boy at home means he hungry – all of the time. I make sure I start his day with a big breakfast usually consisting of a fresh fruit smoothie along with pancakes or waffles and some fresh fruit. Because of his food allergies, I pack his lunch each day with things I know he’ll eat and that will keep him full throughout the long day. Even still, the minute he walks in the door from school he runs right to the fridge or the pantry for a snack.
For this reason I’ve found it easiest to have a dedicated snack bin for him. One in the fridge for cold things like fresh fruit, yogurt and string cheese and another in the pantry. This way if he wants a snack he know right where to look. Each week I’ll change it up or add something new so he doesn’t get tired of the same things.
It also makes for easy mornings on me. When I’m packing his lunch I can just go grab something from each of the bins to throw in his lunch box or in his bag for sports practices after school. I used two sturdy rectangular containers to hold the snacks.
To help keep this system flowing, I make sure I stock up on his favorites when they go on sale. I have a special bookcase in my laundry room that I use for snack storage. When prices are good, I’ll stock up on everything from drink boxes to his favorite granola bars.
This was when I run out of something I don’t have to run to the store but just to the other room instead. Not only does it save me money but it saves me time. Especially during the cold winter months, I usually have enough stock pile built up where if I don’t make it to the grocery store because of snow or ice, I don’t have to worry.
Right now my local Acme Supermarket is having their Huge Anniversary sale which means stock up prices on some of our favorite like gatorade for sports practices and granola bars for school snacks.
I shopped at Acme’s Huge Anniversary sale but you can check out what great deals are available at Albertsons, Safeway and Jewel too!
